2010-2021

The paintings and prints Maria Ojascastro makes reveal themselves by degrees. In the depth of layers, the studied application of colors that build energy and imagery, with subtle differences and fine distinctions of line, shape and form, her pieces draw viewers in. Her works speak universal truths through her very personal lens.

Featured in Art St Louis "This Moment" exhibit. "Yellow Shadow" 12x9" July 2020. The black lines and cool blocks of colors were inspired by Chagall's stained glass windows in Chicago's Art Institute. The yellow shadow is a form that doesn't make sense, just as so much of my journey through the 2020 Pandemic doesn't make sense.
"Look" 12x9" Acrylic on canvas board, July 2020. The layers of textures and colors represent happy times in the midst of uncertainty. I like the yellow because it doesn't make sense. Just like so much during the 2020 Pandemic doesn't make sense. I have created more meaningful work in the last four months than I have in any other period of my life while working full-time. It doesn't make sense...
"Crossing Borders" 12x9" Acrylic on canvas board, July 2020. This was completed during the 2020 Pandemic. It is inspired by those who forge ahead during uncertain times.
"To Plant a Garden is To Believe in Tomorrow #2" 8x8" May 2020. This artwork was completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by the 2020 graduates who had the most unusual end of the school year.
"Wait" 12x12" Acrylic on canvas board, July 2020. This artwork was completed during the 2020 Pandemic. It is inspired by the frustration of waiting for the unknown. Exhibited in Art Saint Louis’ “This Moment” exhibit.
"Hope" 12x9" April 2020. This artwork was completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by my journey during the first month of Shelter in Place orders.
"Amazing Grace" 12x9" April 2020. This artwork was completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by my journey during the first month of Shelter in Place orders.
Inspired by the volunteers who sewed masks.
"Cut" watercolor. This artwork is from the "Mundane but Meaningful" Series completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by my journey during the first month of Shelter in Place orders.
"Smashed" watercolor. This artwork is from the "Mundane but Meaningful" Series completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by my journey during the first month of Shelter in Place orders.
"Spring Storm" 8 1/2 x 6 3/4" Hand tinted with acrylic, prisma color, India ink and turmeric, April 2020. This artwork is from the "Mundane but Meaningful" Series completed during the 2020 Pandemic, inspired by my journey during the first month of Shelter in Place orders.

Glimpse of Hope
Kirkwood Performing Arts Center
Spring 2021

It was my pleasure to present the artwork of some of my high school students in the same venue as my exhibit.  In August 2020, I had the great privilege to be a long-term substitute teacher at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. What the students created while attending school virtually included expressions of the Black Lives Matter protests, self-reflections, COVID-19 uncertainties, Black History pride, the spirit of anticipation, and so much more. In January 2021, we welcomed approximately 10% of the students back in the school building, giving a glimpse of hope. Visual Art teachers William Perry, Kelly Terry and I are pleased to give the St. Louis community, a Glimpse of Hope featuring artwork by:

The Peace Poles movement started in Japan over fifty years ago. There are over 200,000 Peace Poles in the world on every continent. This message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" is usually written on the poles and they are planted to uplift, empower and elevate the human consciousness to embrace the oneness of our global family.

Much of the art in this exhibit is based around surviving significant challenges. Windows, doorways, locks and keys symbolize choosing to move forward. The clocks set at a little past midnight represent living the life I would have chosen. "This Little Piggy Went to the Market" series reflects the humor and joy that surrounds me. Symbols from this series are from my Filipino-American upbringing.
