Mary Beth Tipton
I spent 24 years as an art educator working with young children, which undoubtedly influences my perspective and concerns. Suspending self-consciousness and my inner critic are essential to making art that feels authentic.
My imagery tends to be both playful and dark. It is inspired by the familiar and domestic.
In my most recent work I explore layers of texture and pattern. Abstract components recede, advance and mingle with figurative expressions. I appreciate the versatility of acrylic paints and mediums to create a ground on which I apply layers of oil paint.
When I’m in painting mode I feel drawn to observing the way in which seasons and human events are reflected in the environment.
