Victoria Pendragon shares her inspiration in her artwork.
Pattern is inherent in life… in the external symmetry of bodies… all sorts of bodies in all sorts of species. It is immediately comprehensible and, when it is not we see asymmetry where there should be symmetry – in a body or in a face – we have a response that is more than simply a mental recognition. There is a need to ‘adjust’ oneself mentally to viewing it. Yet… this is balanced, in life forms like the human body – by an internal lack of symmetry. We have a bit of it in us: nipples, ovaries, testes, kidneys, but there’s only one pancreas and one liver, and one heart, and the distribution, while functionally perfect, is certainly not symmetrical. This is what I am playing with in my paintings, that state that is, at once, both balanced and kinda random. My paintings are an elaboration and a reduction of that.
